Message from the CEO

Welcome to the first Tourism Council WA newsletter for 2009.

I trust that you all had a busy Xmas and New Year Holiday Period and that business was brisk.

As we enter uncertain times, associated with the global economic climate, there are a number of initiatives that TCWA will be involved in to support the tourism industry through this period.

Tourism Industry Roundtable - Tourism WA has established a Tourism Industry Roundtable which will provide a forum for key stakeholders to monitor the health of the State’s tourism industry and to proactively devise strategies to mitigate the anticipated downturn in tourism demand. TCWA will participate in this roundtable, the first meeting of which will be held on 10th February 2009. If you have issues or suggestions that you would like presented at the roundtable please forward these to TCWA.

Tourism Stimulus Package - TCWA will be meeting with the Minister to discuss the concept of a tourism stimulus package which would involve all businesses and organisations operating in the tourism industry, and Government, to pool resources and develop a coordinated effort to stimulate tourism in Western Australia.

The Tourism Council will be also be actively representing and lobbying on behalf of the tourism industry as we move through the year.  The tourism industry has shown in past times of difficulty that, by working innovatively and collaboratively together, it has the resilience to endure adversity and emerge as an even stronger industry.

There's Nothing to do in Perth?!?

There's Nothing to do in Perth?!?

It has been recognise that, during these tough economic times, the industry needs to be innovative and look at embracing quality and new technologies as a way forward.

To this end, TCWA have developed a relationship with local IPTV Station, LocoTV, to offer Members and Accredited Operators exceptional rates to participate in two new online shows promoting tourism operators right across WA - 'WA Unwrapped' & 'There's Nothing to do in Perth?!?'

For a small investment, you can not only participate in the online show but you will also receive your own TV quality copy of your segment to use in your own advertising, promotional DVD’s etc, along with Internet and search optimised video files to run from your website.  The investment in rich media for your website can greatly aid in increasing traffic to your site as it makes a website more useful for, and popular with, users.

The team from LocoTV will be travelling throughout WA in 2009 and will be coming to your region. We will be in contact with our Accredited Operators prior to travel to your area, however there are limited spots for each show so you will need to get in quick.  To see an online demo version of the Perth based series visit www.locotv.com.au  In the meantime, if you would like further information, please contact Anna at TCWA.

Review of Tourist Accommodation Development in WA

In December 2008 TCWA President Paul King gave a presentation to the Board of Tourism WA highlighting TCWA’s concerns in relation to developing tourist accommodation in WA.  As an outcome of this presentation Tourism WA is embarking on a comprehensive review of tourism development in this State.

This review will commence in February 2009 and will involve relevant Government Agencies and Organisations, and private sector representatives. TCWA will be represented in the review by Board Member and Edge Resorts Group Principal Jon Jessop who chairs the Tourism Development and Supply sub-committee of TCWA.

If you have issues you would like considered by the review please forward them to TCWA.
